What Can Plastic Waste be Used For?

Over 100 billion pieces of plastic waste are thrown away each year. However, these pieces of plastic could be repurposed and used for a wide variety of applications, including home DIY, construction, energy production, and much more.

At Home

There’s no doubt that one of the biggest producers of plastic waste is homes. This is because most of our shopping products are covered/made from plastic, and when their use is over, the plastic waste is thrown away; however, reusing the plastic waste is easier than you may think. Plastic waste can be used for a range of at-home DIYs, including containers, storage, art, garden tools, decoration, watering cans, and plant pots.

Building and Construction

Plastic is the most commonly used building material in the building and construction industry as plastic is one of the most durable, lightweight, waterproof, easy to mould, and strong materials. Plastic can be used for a wide range of building materials, including:

  • Pipes
  • Cables
  • Flooring
  • Insulation
  • Window and door profiles
  • Seals

Energy

One of the most innovative discoveries was that plastic waste can be used to generate energy and fuels like hydrogen, methane and ethylene from a variety of processes.

There are many different processes used when converting plastic into energy and fuels, such as cold plasma pyrolysis (thermal decomposition used to recover valuable materials and convert plastic waste into electricity and fuels), hydrothermal processing (plastic being heated at a high an extreme high temperature and converted into oil), and photoreforming (light-absorbing photocatalyst added to plastic products and placed in an alkaline under sunlight, which produces bubbles of hydrogen gas).
